"Bird Song" is named after the host of bird calls that greet you each morning (and the night jars that you hear after dark).
It is the perfect 'private bush camp' for a ‘family-of-4’ vacation or for a secluded ‘get-away-from-it-all retreat’ for couples.
The architect designed timber structure is set on a slope with views through and over the fynbos and right at the edge of pristine Indigenous Forest.
A wood fired fireplace ensures you are (relatively) warm in winter.
The space
Our concept for Bird Song was the simplicity of a 'box that opens to nature' with the bath (sunk into a deck), the outside shower, and the outside composting toilet were all designed to give you that connective with nature.
Please review the photographs to understand what we offer and the forest-fynbos setting of this Cabin. It is a rustic, simple, practical and comfortable alternative to a camping holiday.
A covered and fully resourced external kitchen provides what you need: twin gas cooker, fridge, small oven for roasting/grilling, and a kitchen table top work surface. There is an external braai with stainless steel braai grids, stands and utensils.
You have the place to yourself while enjoying the outdoors and proximity to nature’s beauty.
The external shower, bath and toilet are each on separate decks, accessed by their own timber walk-ways.
In front of the Cabin is a sloped grassy space that leads you straight into the indigenous forest.
There is a full-time neighbour in 4 treehouse lane (to your right), and we have recently welcomed 2 couples who have bought the remaining erfs at the end of tree house lane.
Guest access
Bird Song is located in Kuthumba eco-estate: your neighhours are either full time residents or other guests whom are renting for their vacation.
The property in not fenced (nature reserve), so no pets are allowed.
You can expect to experience the wildlife (bush pigs, snakes - some venomous but not aggressive - monkeys) and insect life (harmless spiders, black scorpions, fire-flies, etc) of this natural location.
Please, Please do NOT feed any visiting wild animals!
Morning and evening ‘feedtime’ at nearby wildlife sanctuaries means roaring lions and howling monkeys. And of course, abundant birdsong!
You turn of N2 at Kurland township, drive past it and then take a left turn down Forest Hall road (a 12 km dirt/gravel road) to get to Kuthumba Eco -Village.
Please maintain slow speed limit (40km p/hour) for your comfort and the maintenance of your vehicle, safety of folk who are walking along the roadside (collecting firewood or going fishing) as well as wildlife.
Other things to note
Given that this is (ironically) a water restricted area, we request that you conserve water - there is 10 000 litres of stored rainwater as well as connection to non-drinkable Kuthumba Water (managed by the Home Owners Association). We are upgrading water harvesting with another 10 000 litres, and the system is regularly checked and maintained.
There is a separate shed that includes a deep freeze (food storage for long stay) and an automatic washing machine.
The bath, shower and toilet are built outside surrounded by trees.
During load shedding, there is NO water flow as water pressure is from a water pump (we are purchasing a generator)
Finally, we have an external composting toilet system (no flushing loos) - it is purpose designed, and is well maintained...
All you need to do is enjoy the view and follow the simple instructions...
